Plantkracht (NL), Wouter Bijdendijk

Description

Most of us understand that spending time in nature and eating well are important for our health. Yet the idea that specific plants, mushrooms, roots and flowers can actively support the body and mind is often dismissed as folklore. A missed opportunity, considering that plants have been used as medicine and healing allies by cultures around the world for thousands of years.

In Plant Power, Wouter Bijdendijk explores around thirty remarkable plants and mushrooms, many of them locally found, that have traditionally been used to support immunity, vitality, digestion, endurance, cognitive function and overall wellbeing. Each featured plant is accompanied by two vegetarian recipes created by Wouter's brother, acclaimed chef Joris Bijdendijk, making it easy to bring these botanical treasures into everyday life.

Alongside these practical applications, Wouter also delves into a selection of ritual and consciousness-expanding plants that have played a fascinating role in human history and cultural development.

Richly illustrated and beautifully written, Plant Power is both an inspiring reference guide and a celebration of the deep relationship between people and plants. Filled with ethnobotanical insights, intriguing stories, personal reflections and delicious recipes, it invites readers to rediscover the wisdom and potential of the natural world.

Writer

Wouter Bijdendijk is an anthropologist, ethnobotanist and researcher of traditional plant knowledge. Fascinated by the relationship between people and plants, he has spent decades studying how different cultures around the world use herbs, mushrooms, roots and ritual plants to support health, wellbeing and human development.

For more than twenty years, Wouter travelled the world as the performing magician Ramana, a journey that brought him into contact with diverse healing traditions, indigenous knowledge systems and plant medicines from every continent. Alongside his travels, he immersed himself in the study of ethnobotany and pharmacognosy, the science of medicinal plants and natural substances.

His book Plant Power brings together scientific research, cultural history, traditional plant wisdom and personal experience into an accessible and beautifully illustrated guide to some of nature's most remarkable allies. Through his work, Wouter encourages a deeper understanding of the plants that have nourished, healed and inspired humanity for thousands of years.

Today, he continues to share his passion for ethnobotany, medicinal plants and the enduring relationship between humans and the natural world through lectures, writing and educational projects.
